Lough Ennell is renowned amongst European
Fishermen as being one of Europe's leading trout fishing lakes. This beautiful
lake has been awarded the "Blue Flag" status, and Tudenham sandy shore
is especially popular with swimmers and boaters. Boats are available for hire on
the lake either for fishing, or just exploring the islands. Windsurfing, and canoeing
are also allowed on the lake.
Mullingar championship golf Club, and Lilliput par three golf course, horse riding, greyhound racing, as well as superb forest walks are all close by.
Mullingar Bronze and Pewter Visitors Centre is a must for the discerning visitor. This craft involves meticulous casting and hand finishing. All items are available for the visitor to enjoy and to capture some of the mystique associated with this craft.
Tyrrellspass Castle built around 1411 is a short drive away. The castle incorporates a fully licensed restaurant, a coffee shop, as well as a museum & gift shop. There is a fine view of the surrounding country side from the parapets.
Locke's Distillery &
Museum in Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath is believed to be the oldest licensed
pot still distillery in the world. Established in 1757 Irish malt whiskey was
made here for almost 200 years.
The local community has re-opened the distillery as a museum of industrial
archaeology to show you how whiskey was produced in times past.
Follow the process from the grinding of the grain to the casking of the final
product. Watch the working water wheel and see the fermentation vats.
Following Jonathon Swift's visit to 'Lilliput' on Lough Ennell, he was moved to write Gulliver's Travels. It is widely believed that after noticing how small the people on the opposite bank of the lake appeared to be, he was inspired to write this wonderful children's tale, and used the name of the small hamlet 'Lilliput' on Lough Ennell that inspired it.
The Hill of Uisneách, is reputed to be the very centre of Ireland. Located just five miles west of Lough Ennell, this picturesque attraction, with its links with Cúcullen is steeped in ancient Irish History and folklore.
